Kathmandu, Nepal
How to hire remote employees from Nepal — without breaking anything.
I sit in Kathmandu and have spent a decade on both sides of this: building HR for Nepali teams, and helping founders in the US, Australia and Europe hire into them. Here is what the talent costs, how to pay it legally, the time-zone truth, and the six steps that separate a remote hire who compounds from one who quietly stalls.
Salary reality
2026 Kathmandu bands, monthly.
NPR figures are local-market bands for well-funded Kathmandu employers. The USD column is what foreign companies typically pay for the same person on a global-remote contract — the gap is why these hires stay.
| Role | NPR / month | USD / month (remote) |
|---|---|---|
| Software engineer — mid | 120,000 – 200,000 | 1,500 – 3,000 |
| Software engineer — senior | 200,000 – 450,000 | 2,500 – 5,000 |
| Product manager | 180,000 – 350,000 | 2,000 – 4,000 |
| Product / brand designer | 90,000 – 180,000 | 1,200 – 2,500 |
| HR manager | 80,000 – 150,000 | 900 – 1,800 |
| Customer support / ops | 45,000 – 80,000 | 500 – 1,000 |
Bands are practitioner estimates for 2026, not a survey. Add the Dashain festival bonus (one month) and employer SSF at 20% of basic to get true cost.
The process
Six steps, in order.
- 01
Pick the legal route before you post the role
EOR under five hires, your own Pvt. Ltd. past ten, contractor only for genuinely finite project work. Changing route after someone starts means re-papering the relationship and usually a pay conversation.
- 02
Price the role in NPR and USD
Decide whether you pay a local band or a global band, and say so out loud internally. Silent hybrids create the worst outcome: you pay above Kathmandu market and still lose the candidate to a US-remote offer.
- 03
Write a scope that survives async work
One page: outcomes for the first 90 days, what the person decides alone, what needs a second opinion, and what 'done' looks like. This is the single highest-leverage document in a remote hire.
- 04
Source through people, screen through work
Referrals and the export-product firms beat job boards. Use one paid, time-boxed work sample rather than four interviews — Nepali candidates are used to unpaid tests, and paying signals you're a different kind of employer.
- 05
Close on total package, not base
Show base, festival bonus, SSF, insurance, leave and stipends as one annual number. Candidates comparing you to a local employer cannot see that value unless you write it down.
- 06
Onboard against the payroll calendar
Most providers need onboarding closed by the 20th to pay in that cycle, and SSF plus bank details take a few days. Set the start date after those, not before.
Time zones
UTC+5:45 is a feature for APAC and Europe, a constraint for the US.
Nepal runs 45 minutes off the hour, which surprises every calendar tool once. Practically: Singapore and Australian mornings overlap fully, London gets a solid afternoon window, and US Pacific gets an early-morning-Nepal slot only. If you're in San Francisco, do not buy a Nepal hire expecting live collaboration — buy one expecting excellent asynchronous output plus two anchored calls a week, and write your decisions down where they can be read the next morning.
Payroll
What comes out of a Nepali payslip.
Salary is only the headline. These five lines decide whether payroll is boring or becomes a back-payment conversation two years in.
Income tax (TDS)
Withheld monthly by the employer and deposited to the Inland Revenue Department. Nepal's slabs are progressive and differ for single and married filers; the 1% first-slab social security tax does not apply to employees enrolled in the SSF.
Social Security Fund
11% from the employee and 20% from the employer on basic salary, deposited by the 15th of the following Nepali month. This replaces the old provident fund and gratuity handling for enrolled staff.
Festival (Dashain) bonus
One month's salary, paid before Dashain. Universal in practice and expected in every offer, even where a contract is silent.
Leave encashment
Unused annual leave accrues and is paid out on exit up to the statutory cap, so it belongs in your monthly accrual, not in the exit surprise column.
Payslips and records
A written payslip per cycle and payroll records retained for inspection. Keep them in English and Nepali if an auditor may ever read them.
Rates reflect the Social Security Fund scheme and the current Finance Act. Confirm the year's slabs with your accountant before your first cycle — they move annually.
Contracts
Eight clauses the contract must carry.
- 01Written appointment letter in Nepali or English, signed before the start date — an unwritten employee still has full statutory rights.
- 02Employment type stated: regular, work-based, time-bound, casual or part-time. The default is regular, and regular means indefinite.
- 03Probation of no more than six months, with confirmation confirmed in writing rather than by silence.
- 04Salary broken into basic and allowances, because SSF and gratuity-equivalent contributions calculate on basic.
- 05Working hours capped at 8 per day and 48 per week, with overtime at 1.5x and a documented weekly rest day.
- 06Leave entitlements: 13 public holidays, 18 days annual, 12 days sick at half pay, 98 days maternity, 15 days paternity.
- 07IP assignment and confidentiality drafted to survive termination, with a governing-law clause you can actually enforce.
- 08Termination: cause, process, notice period and severance stated explicitly, plus the exit and handover expectations.
Compliance
Four mistakes that cost real money.
Running a full-time role on a freelance contract
If you set the hours, supply the tools and direct the work, Nepal reads it as employment regardless of the paperwork. Back-dated SSF, tax and severance follow.
Paying into a personal wallet or peer-to-peer app
Foreign-currency earnings must arrive through a licensed bank and be repatriated within 35 days. Pay to the employee's bank or through a licensed remittance route.
Skipping SSF because 'they asked us to'
Enrolment is a legal duty on the employer, not a preference. The employee's take-home objection is solved by grossing up, not by opting out.
No paper trail before a dismissal
After probation, dismissal needs cause, notice and a chance to respond. Document performance from month one, in writing, dated.
Frequently asked
Hiring from Nepal — straight answers.
- Can a US or European company hire remote employees from Nepal?
- Yes. Nepal has no rule preventing residents from working for overseas employers. You have three compliant routes: engage an Employer of Record that holds a Nepal entity, register your own Nepal Pvt. Ltd., or contract genuinely project-based freelancers. What you cannot safely do is run a full-time role on a freelance invoice for years — Nepal reads the substance of the relationship, not the label on the contract.
- How much do you pay a remote employee in Nepal?
- Kathmandu market rates in 2026, monthly: mid-level software engineer NPR 120,000–200,000, senior engineer NPR 200,000–450,000, product manager NPR 180,000–350,000, designer NPR 90,000–180,000, HR manager NPR 80,000–150,000, customer support NPR 45,000–80,000. Companies hiring directly for USD-denominated roles routinely pay USD 2,000–5,000/month, which sits well above local bands and is why retention on those roles is strong.
- How do Nepali employees legally receive salary in USD?
- Through the formal banking channel. Nepal Rastra Bank requires foreign-currency inflows to arrive via a licensed bank, and export-of-service earnings must be repatriated within 35 days. Practically that means a direct SWIFT transfer to the employee's Nepali bank, or a licensed remittance route; the employee declares the income and pays tax on it. Wise, Payoneer and similar rails are widely used but the compliance position depends on the account and the purpose code — have the employee confirm with their bank.
- What time zone overlap can you expect with Nepal?
- Nepal is UTC+5:45. That gives roughly a five-hour overlap with London afternoons, a full overlap with Singapore and Australia mornings, and only an early-morning-Nepal / late-evening-US-Pacific window. For US teams, plan for two to three hours of live overlap and design the rest of the work asynchronously — written specs, recorded demos, decisions in writing.
- What benefits do Nepali employees expect from a foreign employer?
- Beyond the statutory floor (SSF enrolment, 13 public holidays, 18 days annual leave, 12 days sick leave at half pay, 98 days maternity leave), the two expectations that decide offers are the Dashain festival bonus — one month's salary, universal in Nepal and often forgotten by foreign employers — and private medical insurance for the employee plus dependents. A home-office stipend and a learning budget cost little and read as serious.
- Where do you actually find good candidates in Nepal?
- Referrals first: senior engineers in Kathmandu move in a small, well-connected circle. Then the export-oriented product firms (Leapfrog, Fusemachines, Deerwalk, F1Soft, CloudFactory) as sourcing pools, LinkedIn with Kathmandu-based filters, and the local boards — Merojob, JobsNepal, Kumari Job — which give volume but need heavy screening. Expect three to six weeks from posting to a signed offer for a mid-level role.
- What is the biggest cause of failure when hiring remotely from Nepal?
- Not cost or skill — it's a role designed for the office and shipped to a remote hire. If the work depends on hallway context, the Nepal hire looks slow within six weeks. The fix is boring: a written scope with visible outputs, one accountable manager in the same working window at least twice a week, a 30-60-90 with checkable milestones, and reviews on the same calendar as everyone else.
- How do notice periods and termination work in Nepal?
- The Labour Act 2074 sets probation at a maximum of six months, during which termination is straightforward. After confirmation, dismissal requires cause and a documented process — notice, a chance to respond, written reasons — or notice pay in lieu. Redundancy has its own procedure and severance calculation. Document performance from month one; retrofitting a paper trail after the fact is what turns an exit into a labour dispute.
